It's worth pointing out that the majority of pond problems revolve around the question of dirty and murky ponds. These problems are actually very easy to resolve but to make sure a fish pond contains clean water a biofilter is absolutely essential and to prevent a pond going murky (caused by suspended algae in almost all cases) it's important to install an Ultra Violet Light Clarifier.
Other common problems revolve around the pump and these more often than not are related to blockages in the system somewhere ... the suction is the most common area giving a problem. This becomes blocked with pond debris or the sponge (if you have one on the suction side) blocks with slimy algae and this reduces water going into pump which means less comes out as well. Clear the suction and the pump returns to normal.
Modern pumps from Hozelock and Oase have overcome most of these problems. Always buy a modern pump from a reliable supplier and look for words like "solids handling" or a "dirty water pump" or a "filter pump".
