The Victorian Covered Water Garden Style...

This courtyard water garden is very formal. The design has a small raised pond, plenty of bricks and stone pavers. The Victorian water garden looks marvelous and has a variety of green foliage plants such as palms, grasses, ivies and ferns. These plants are raised under a glass or plastic roof.

Design components of the Victorian water garden

There are 5 main design components. These are:

  • The red-brick (or stone paved patio)
  • raised pond
  • the roof (whether glass or plastic)
  • plants
  • the columns

Trellis screens which are high would be perfect for this arrangement as well. The design feels very private. This garden design is suitable for a small walled space. This garden allows one to sit outside without having to worry about disturbance for example from the weather. The Victorian covered water garden can be constructed in a large conservatory. However in here you will have to live the columns and trellis.

How to create a Victorian covered water garden

The ideal space for creating this water garden would be a space about 6m

  1. Draw up a sketch of the design - then make a detailed diagram taking into consideration the house, boundaries, structures and large trees. Drains also need to be noted.
  2. Get rid of all unwanted plants - give them to your friends if you do not want to destroy them.
  3. Build the pond with a rigid plastic liner
  4. Build a level patio area around the pond; use red bricks and stone slabs
  5. Cover the area with a plastic-sheet or glass roof, complete with fancy columns
  6. Add containers planted with old fashioned plants like ferns and fuchsias
  7. Plant grapevines at the sides

Care and maintenance

The seaside effect can only be achieved if and only if the water is clear - and thus the pump and filter need to be in perfect working condition at all times. You can also use salt to clear the water. Get rid of all dead leaves and debris. Do not enter the pool with muddy feet.

The plants that are sensitive to frost need to be over wintered and add sand and shingle to the area around the chalet. Clean the hut and fence with latex white paint so that they look sun-bleached and weather-worn.
