Why Test Pond Water? Prevention is often better than cure, as the saying goes is definitely true when it comes to pond keeping. It doesn’t have to be viewed as a chore but instead as a great way to gain extra knowledge and to have fun in doing so. Apart from keeping your backyard pond aesthetically pleasing, regular testing will increase the health and longevity of your Koi, gold fish and other pond fish species. Koi carp are hardy but prolonged exposure to poor pond water conditions will cause stress and increase the opportunity for illness to take hold.
When Should I Test My Pond Water? Ideally when testing your garden pond water you should maintain a record (log) of some description, so as to keep an accurate record of fluctuations, given water temperature, air temperature variances. This will help you quickly and easily identify any severe fluctuations, therefore giving you ample opportunity to take corrective measures before things get worse. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and temperature should be made at least once every 2 weeks. Pond water tests should be carried out when installing a new filtration system, changing the pond water or repairing damage to the pond. During these times it may be necessary to test the water daily. During mild summers, testing may be cut back to once every three weeks, and during periods of midwinter inactivity, testing can be stopped.
