How To Install An In Ground Preformed Garden Pond Liner
Step 1 - Place the preformed liner pond in position and mark out the shape on the ground. Dig out the shape of the preformed pond liner down to the same depth as the marginal shelf. Make the hole slightly larger than the marked out shape. Use a spirit level to ensure that the hole is level, especially around the perimeter.
Step 2 - Place the preformed pond liner in the excavation in its intended position and mark out the shape of the bottom of the preformed garden pond liner in the soil.
Step 3 - Remove the preformed garden pond and spread a 1” layer of sand over the base and the marginal shelf areas. Place the preformed garden pond in the excavated hole and make sure that the base is firm, level and that there is solid support under the marginal shelving.
Step 4 - As the preformed pond liner is starting to fill with water, push sand into the gap between the preformed garden pond liner and the soil. The level of this backfill must go in unison with the water filling the pool and the pressure at which it is pushed in should correspond with the pressure from the water in the pool. This is a balancing act in which the sand or water may distort the shape.
Step 5 - Ensure the edges are firmly supported by soil.
Step 6 - Edging; leave for about a week before starting to allow final settling to take place. Ensure the edging overlaps the pond by about 2 inches (to keep the liner in the shade to prevent sunlight degradation).

If you intend to install a backyard fish pond that is more than 120 gallons then the best choice of garden pond is a backyard liner pond constructed from flexible EPDM rubber or an alternative pond liner material such as Butyl rubber or PVC, as this is the lowest cost option for medium sized garden ponds as well as being the most flexible in terms of the shape and size of backyard fish pond you can achieve. However flexible pond liners are not as easy to install and are susceptible to damage from dogs and cats, should they decide to take a swim in your liner fish pond.
