Why Is Pond Salt A Great Fish Parasite Treatment Method?

Just to clarify pond salt, table salt and common salt is the same thing. The only slight difference is that manufacturers sometimes add Iodine to table salt. This is known as Iodized Salt. Iodine is essential to the effective working of the thyroid gland in human beings and is added by certain manufacturers in tiny amounts ( 0.006% to help counter possible iodine deficiency.

Sodium Chloride (Na Cl) as it is chemically known isn't made as such in practice but is recovered from salt pans (large evaporation dams) where salt water is allowed to concentrate. The salt is then harvested and then refined.

Table salt has been refined and is perfectly safe to use in koi ponds and potentially safer than raw salt (commonly used in animal feeds) as it doesn't contain contaminants from the initial recovery process

The use of pond salt for the treatment and eradication of fish parasites is common practice amongst many pond keepers. Dr Erik Johnson recommends that you use pond salt, before you try anything else for parasitic fish infestations, for the following reasons:

  • It is a cheap pond water medication that is readily available

  • If the stages of parasite infection are relatively advanced and the salt doesn't cure the infected host fish, it won't do it any harm or kill it.

  • Some pond water medications for the treatment of parasitic infestations, including Ich (White Spot), Chilodinella, Costia etc harm the beneficial bacteria living on your pond biofilter, severely affecting pond filter performance.

  • Unless the dose of salt is excessive it will be safe and eco friendly to your pond fish.

  • The majority of fish parasites are killed quickly.

  • Pond salt (common salt) is 100% safe for humans and other wild life.
