It was during the 1970's that "bubble bead filtration" was first used as a means of providing large scale biological filtration for fish. These air washed filters were a success but as is the case with many new technologies they were improved upon. During the 1980's a team of civil engineers from Louisiana State University's Civil Engineering Aquatic Systems Laboratory showed that hydraulically washed bead filters could provide both mechanical separation (solids removal) and biological filtration when tested with catfish grow-out systems. It wasn't long after this that the "bubble washed bead filter" was tested and engineered specifically for use as a biological pond filter in outdoor fish ponds.

A bead filter uses floating bead biomedia that traps solid waste and also provides a large SSA (specific surface area) on which cultures of bacteria colonize. These bacteria colonies are responsible for removing unwanted and toxic nitrogenous waste from fish feces in what is known as the nitrification process.
