The Joy and Pleasure a Garden Fish Pond Can Make...
Read this interesting letter from

You are my knight in shining armour.
Since I began to read your factual down-to-earth articles I actually
understand about pond maintenance. It isn't simple - nature never is
but left of its own accord will usually make the right decision.
Certainly, I have always felt that the less man interferes with the
natural side of pond keeping, the better.
It's a fascinating subject and having a pond in one's yard delivers
all that it promises and more. I'm lucky to be living in a
Mediterranean climate in a fairly noise-free village so sitting out
at night when the sound of running water is at its clearest or in
the shade during the day is a pleasure.
I have been building and maintaining ponds for years and I'm really
beginning to consider taking up pond installation seriously as my
next phase in life. Teaching judo has given me years of pleasure and
challenge but I shan't be able to continue much beyond the 60 mark
(next year) and the idea of building so many oases for the simple
enjoyment of people in this hot climate is second to none (except
teaching judo).
In this up-tight country of ours, people often go frantic looking
for the answer to life. Take Feng Shui for instance . But ponds -
you can't argue with that. Mine is just below my lounge window where
I have a window seat. The pond brings the house out into the garden
and the garden back into the house.
When they have eventually decided on a pond, here in Israel people
tend to opt for the easiest more immediate solution (using algae
killers with plastic plants - yuck). We have a phrase "it'll be OK"
even if we know that it probably won't be. Professional advice
concerning pond maintenance is difficult to come by (I still use the
wrong pump as I cannot afford the right kind) and it is often
difficult to obtain materials.
For my next step I will order some
Viresco. The water
is clear enough but the gunge is accumulating on the bottom of the
pond and it would be nice to know that the pond is as clean as it
can get.
Thanks for listening to me. I've been rambling on - a sure sign of
impending pension.
Wish you well.
Trish
