Why are My Koi Bloated?
Assuming a koi or goldfish is just not fat from overfeeding or pregnant then the probable cause is Dropsy also referred to as Pine Cone disease because the scales of the fish stick out and look like a pine cone. In this case the eyes may also bulge out abnormally.
Dropsy is considered to be an extremely dangerous disease and effected fish should be removed and quarantined if possible. Infected fish often have serious internal damage and are not able to be saved. It is often recommended that a fish with Dropsy should be euthanased.
The bloating associated with Dropsy is the result of accumulation of excessive tissue fluid around the abdomen area and is the result of an internal bacterial infection or due to the fact that the koi's kidneys not working.
Dropsy also effects goldfish in a pond.
